Faroese Cross-Country Championships in Hoydalar on Saturday

Machine-translated from Faroese and not yet reviewed. Read the original.

In recent years the Faroese Cross-Country Championships have been held on the so-called “Stovugólvið” (“the Living Room Floor”) above Svangaskarð in Toftir. We have had many good and enjoyable moments there, and not least memorable ones because of snow, gales and blizzards. Unfortunately, the turnout has never been as good as the organisers had expected and hoped, so this year we are going to try something different.

Before the start of the first Faroese Cross-Country Championships in 2004 on “Stovugólvið”

We contacted the Environment Agency (Umhvørvisstovan), which manages the whole green area in Hoydalar, and asked whether it would be possible to organise a cross-country race in that beautiful area. They were very helpful and were happy to do their part to make such an event a success.

So the Faroese Cross-Country Championships will be held in Hoydalar next Saturday morning, 12 February, at 11:00. The categories are as follows:

  • Girls and boys born 1997–1999 – run 2 laps, approx. 2.5 km
  • Junior women and men born 1994–1996 – run 3 laps, approx. 4 km
  • Women and men, open categories, born 1993 or earlier – run 6 laps, approx. 8 km
  • Women veterans born 1965 or earlier – run 6 laps, approx. 8 km
  • Men veterans born 1956–1965 – run 6 laps, approx. 8 km
  • Men super-veterans born 1955 or earlier – run 6 laps, approx. 8 km

The start and finish will be on the large field by the Studentaskúlin. The race is run on grass and forest paths. In two places we cross Sanatoriivegurin. So that it is possible to run in spikes, something will be laid over the road. The route will be well marked so that people don’t go off course.

The route

Each lap is about 1.3 km. If there are many participants, the younger ones will run first and the adults afterwards. Otherwise there will be a mass start. Faroese Championship medals will be awarded to the top three in all categories. The fee is DKK 50 for adults and DKK 20 for girls, boys and juniors.

We have been given permission to use the Studentaskúlin changing rooms from 10:00. Bib numbers can also be collected from then. Please, as far as possible, register via the website. Registration must be completed by 21:00 on Friday evening at the latest.
