In glorious weather, the final round of the Winter Series was held in Runavík on Saturday. As usual, and very fittingly, it took place at one of our oldest running races, namely the Várkapping, on the well-known fast 10 km route, organised by Roysnið.
This winter we have been quick to publish reports from the races, but for all sorts of reasons no report has been written yet from this weekend. So much time has now passed that I will ask you to make do with a yellow-tinted article on Treysti’s website. It can be found here: http://www.treysti.fo/news-treysti+best+i+vetrarkappingini.htm – not for fanatics!

The field was moving at speed on Saturday. Sunglasses turned out to be a must that day once the runners headed out on the final laps.

With wins in the first three rounds, Sam Vang laid the groundwork for his overall victory in the Winter Series. With his wins in Hvannasund and in Runavík, Guttorm Sørensen forced Sam to run the final round, even though he was feeling ill. That way he managed to earn three bonus points and, with 153 points, just poke his nose ahead of Guttorm, who finished on 152 points! Henry Olsen finished third. He crept closer to the front with every race, and in the final race the veteran ran a cracking time and was only a few seconds off the win.

The three women on the podium each missed one race, and although it was different rounds, Rebekka Fuglø became the winner with four wins, Ella Áarstein was second with four second places, and Gunnhild Helmsdal was third with four third places. You would never guess that number 3 is 13 years older than number 2, and number 2 is 16 years older than number 1! There is no doubt that running keeps the body and the mind young! Rebekka also won the junior women’s competition and therefore takes home two trophies. She was the only junior woman to run at least three rounds.

With five wins, Henry Olsen was the outright winner among the veterans. Borgar Biskopstø was just as secure in second place, finishing second in the four races he took part in. It was quite a different story in the contest for third place, which Heini Gregersen “snatched” from John Egolm. Although John finished ahead of Heini in all four rounds he took part in, Heini managed to score 47 points in Hvannasund, when John was absent. This ended up costing John third place, while Heini benefited from his good attendance.

Ella Áarstein won four comfortable victories in four races and was the clear winner among the veteran women. There was more excitement over the other top places. Karin Maria Isaksen was in second place before the final race, but by finishing next across the line on Saturday, Karin Kirke Petersen overtook her. Lydia Gardar could also have joined the battle, but did not take part on Saturday.

Jens Weihe got full value for turning up so faithfully to every race. With two wins and three second places, he became the overall winner among the super veterans. Despite three wins and 150 points, this was not enough for Óli Olsen to push Jens, with his 5 bonus points, off the top spot. Jóannes Ortind in fourth place tried to put pressure on Gunnar Sivertsen, but it was in vain. Gunnar has run this winter as never before, and on the final day he ran a fine 10 km and could go home with the trophy as the third-best super veteran.

Unfortunately, participation in the junior group has not been very high this winter. But Ólavur Egholm has run very well and won the four races he took part in. With two silvers and one gold, Hans Jacobsen finished second overall. Only the two of them completed at least three races.

Three speedy Treysti boys. Nobody is surprised that Marnar was well ahead in all five races. Not even though he was recently discharged from hospital no fewer than twice after nasty falls on his scooter. Einar in second place has improved a lot this year and, like Gunnar Simonsen in third place, has turned up to every race this year. Gunnar has also improved well and shocked everyone by running comfortably under 21 minutes on Saturday. Regin Joensen was also up among the leaders in the overall standings, but first illness and then injury spoiled things for him.

Two fit Bragdið girls! With three wins in three races, Elsa Berg became the overall winner among the girls. Hildur Poulsen won once, but finished second overall.
FÍF thanks everyone for a really good and no less enjoyable series this winter. Hopefully you, and many more besides, will be just as loyal next winter, as there is little doubt that the Winter Series will be held again next year.
Thank you all!
