Faroese Youth Championships: Helpers – Relays

Machine-translated from Faroese and not yet reviewed. Read the original.

The deadline for registration for the Faroese Youth Championships is midnight tonight.

More than 400 entries have been received, which makes this the largest competition of its kind ever held in the Faroe Islands! This will require a lot of helpers, so I hope that most of the usual people, and a few more besides, will lend a hand on either Saturday or Sunday. Or both days. Around 20–25 officials and helpers will be busy the whole time during the seven hours the competitions last in total. That comes to around 150 working hours in all, or roughly a full working month.

If Hvirlan, Bragdið and Treysti each have eight officials/helpers available each day, there will be no problem running the competitions. There will be breaks so that helpers and officials can get a cup of coffee and a bite to eat.

Most of these will be in action at Tórsbreyt on Saturday and Sunday.

Relays

This year we will have relays on the programme. They are always exciting and spectator-friendly, and they move at a blistering pace. They also help build team spirit and a sense of belonging to the club. So that the clubs can field teams in as many age groups as possible, it has been decided to hold a Faroese Championship in the mixed 4×200 m. This means that each team is made up of two girls and two boys. A boy runs the first 200 metres, then a girl takes over, then another boy runs 200 m, and finally a girl runs the last 200 metres. Younger runners will not be allowed to run in an older age group in these races.

A Faroese youth national team made up of Øyvind Lutzen, Rúni Seloy, Rebekka Fuglø and Vár Gregersen ran this event at VU-Spelen in 2006. The result was quite decent, and had it not been for the changeovers, which were poor to put it mildly, this Faroese team would have finished well up the list. Their time was 1:59.23 for the 800 metres in total. Rúni was 12 at the time, while the other three were 13.

These relays are planned to be the last events on the programme on Sunday. But on Saturday we also plan to end the day with 4 x 100 m relays for girls and boys across age groups. These will not be Faroese Championships, but we still hope for two very exciting relays, where the clubs will probably be able to field two girls’ teams and two boys’ teams each.

Now all that is left is to wait for the big day and pray for good weather. There will be no shortage of excitement!
