Two long Saturdays in March were set aside for a coaching course for children aged 7–10. The days were 3 and 31 March, and on each of them we spent around eight hours under the expert guidance of the Faroese course leaders Heri Ziska and Randi Kúrberg. The participants on the courses were: Jógvan Glerfoss, Regin Joensen, Elsa Berg, Hallur Holm, Gunnleivur í Gerðinum, Svend Åge Seloy, Heini Høgnason, Sam Vang, Hans Jacobsen, Rógvi Højgaard, Helgi Geyti, Birna Mohr Joensen, Eyðdis Andreasen, Susan Jacobsen, Einar Gregersen, Hjørdis Hávarsá, Karin K. Petersen and Ingrid Fuglø. Some of them, however, only attended one of the days.
The participants were extremely pleased with the course. The shortage of coaches in particular has been an obstacle to athletics developing even further than it has in recent years. Now it looks as though the clubs will be able to take on even more members. All the course participants felt they had gained so much over these two days that they now have the confidence to take on children’s training in the clubs. This is something to be glad about, because FÍF sees developing the skills of coaches in the Faroe Islands as one of its most important tasks.
This was the first time FÍF has organised a coaching course with Faroese instructors. The undersigned has attended every course that has been held in the Faroe Islands, and it must be said that Heri and Randi were in no way inferior to the otherwise excellent Swedish instructors who have been here. In both the practical and the theoretical parts it shone through clearly that these were instructors who knew what they were talking about. There was little doubt that they have been children’s coaches themselves for several years. And many a gem was passed on to us on the school bench. We should be proud of our Faroese instructors!
This course is part of the Swedish course series. Last spring there was a course focused on athletes aged 14–17. There are also courses for the 10–12 and 12–14 age groups. FÍF will of course continue with this coach education. What and when is not yet decided, but when it happens, everyone is welcome to join this rolling education programme.
