The national team and the talent team compete at the Games

Machine-translated from Faroese and not yet reviewed. Read the original.

Over the weekend our national team and talent team have been in Gothenburg, competing at the big Vårlds Ungdomsspelen, the largest event of its kind in the Nordic countries. It brings together the best athletes from Sweden and the other Nordic countries. This is the fifth time FÍF and the talent team have competed there: first in 2005 and 2006, then again in 2010 and 2011, and now in 2012. Many Faroese records, not least age-group records, have fallen at Nya Ullevi, where the competition takes place.

There were 17 athletes in the party, together with 5 team leaders. Of the 17 athletes, 14 were from the talent group and three represented the national team. Those three are Rógvi Højgaard, Øssur Debes Eiriksfoss and Bjørk Herup Olsen. All three have already met the standard for Island Games selection earlier this year, and they were also the ones who produced our best results. More on that in a later article.

The talent group itself numbered 14 athletes, the largest number ever. In addition, several stayed at home injured. Marnar Djurhuus and Steingrímur Hallsson have both achieved A standards this summer but are at home with injuries. The same goes for Trygvi Laksafoss and Hans Jacobsen, who have achieved the A standard but with too much wind. Injuries, however, have prevented them from getting final approval. Hildur Poulsen was also very close, but on two occasions there was too much wind when she was under the A standard in the 100 metres. And Rebekka Fuglø also withdrew, as she has gone to Kenya for a few weeks this summer.

So in reality this large party could have been even larger, which we think is very encouraging and a healthy sign for athletics in the Faroe Islands.

The team leaders on the trip were Guttorm Sørensen and Hallur Holm, who are in charge of the talent group, along with the head coaches of Hvirlan and Bragdið, Heri Ziska, Jógvan Glerfoss and Debes Christiansen.

Gutti, Jógvan, Hallur, Debes and Heri. All of them were part of the Island Games national team in 1993.
