Once again today there is a forgotten story in the Christmas calendar. And once again it concerns a veterans’ competition. The Nordic Veterans’ Championships were held in Moss, Norway, at the end of June, and the Danish team also included Evald við Garð from Kollafjørður, who thereby becomes the next Kollafjørður native in the Christmas calendar. So that quota is about to be used up.
Middle-distance runner Evald had entered both the 800 m and the 1,500 m in the 40–44 age group. The 800 m came first. Evald set off hard, went through 500 metres in 1:14 and was leading at that point. But then he ran out of steam, his pace dropped considerably, and he finished in 2:07.10. Evald still managed to hold on to a medal place and ended up winning bronze. The next day, 29 June, the 1,500 m was on the programme. Here Evald finished fourth. Evald was a little annoyed about this, as it could just as well have ended with another medal. This time they ran together with the 35–39 age group, and this caused so much confusion that Evald lost track of the race and with it the bronze medal, which he felt he had a good chance of winning. His time was 4:31.69.
Evald set off hard and leads the 800 m race. When it was all over, he came away with the bronze.
Evald við Garð has represented the Faroe Islands at the Island Games only once. That was in Guernsey in 2003, where he ran the 800 m. There he qualified for the final with 2:02.46. In the final, Evald went all out and paid the price for it. His time was 2:09.67.
