Two Faroese records and four golds at Stórmót ÍR

Machine-translated from Faroese and not yet reviewed. Read the original.

This weekend Treysti, Hvirlan and Bragdið are all taking part in the biggest indoor competition in Iceland, Stórmót ÍR. Competition took place today and continues tomorrow, Sunday. Two Faroese records were set today. The first came from Sára Debesardóttir in the 200 m for girls aged 16-17. Despite a poor start, she set a Faroese record of 27.92 sec. That makes her the second Faroese woman to run under 28 sec., after Rebekka Fuglø ran 27.99 on the Tórsbreyt track last year. Sára is therefore the fastest Faroese 200 m sprinter of all time. Sára will no doubt be delighted with this result, considering that the 2013 season did not go so well. But here she really shone, and her result was also good enough for a fine bronze medal and is inside both FÍF’s A standard and elite group standard. The old indoor record dated from 2009. It was held by Rebekka Fuglø with 28.72 sec.

Rebekka Fuglø also held the old 800 m record. She set it at the same competition last year, when she ran 2:20.62 min. Today she won a crushing victory in Reykjavík, pulling away from the rest of the open women’s field from the first lap. Rebekka has been in good form recently, and her aim was also to set a Faroese record. On the third lap her pace dropped slightly, but she still managed to improve her record by almost three seconds. The new record now stands at 2:17.75 min.

Sára og Rebekka
Sára Debesardóttir and Rebekka Fuglø set new Faroese indoor records today. These were records number two and three this year!

But Rebekka was not the only one in yellow to win gold today. Maria Biskopstø, girls 12, also won a very comfortable victory. In the 600 m she was a full five seconds ahead of No. 2. Her time was not quite as good as last weekend at the Reykjavík International Games. But with more competition there is little doubt that Maria will run even faster than the 1:55.92 she ran today, which is also under FÍF’s A standard. Treysti’s third gold medal of the day came from Marnar Djurhuus. As last weekend, the 3,000 m was on the programme. Then he ran 8:45.27 and set a new Faroese record. Things did not go quite so well today. Not in terms of time, at least. But that was most likely due to the lack of competition. With 9:00.40 min, Marnar finished a whole minute ahead of No. 2!

In addition to these three gold medals, Treysti also won two silver medals and one bronze. Oddvør Josephsen, girls 13, once again improved the girls 13 age-group record in the 600 m, finishing No. 2 in 1:45.96 min – 1 second off gold. There was also silver for Einar Gregersen in the 800 metres. In an exciting sprint for places 2-4 he managed to come out on top, and so won silver. His time was 2:05.76 min. In the boys 15, Gunnar Sivertsen won bronze and set a good personal best of 2:18.07. In this race too there was a very hard battle for places 2-4.

But it was not only Treysti who struck gold. Karin Holm Simonsen of Bragdið ran her best ever in the 800 metres, and it was indeed enough for a win and a gold medal. Her time, 2:27.98, is also inside the A standard for FÍF’s talent group. The Faroese athletes won two more bronze medals on the day. Hanus Bergsson of Hvirlan finished No. 3 in the shot put for boys 18-19. His result was 11.35 m. Hanus’s main strength is otherwise the javelin, which, however, is not an indoor event at Stórmót. In the same competition Hallur Simonsen, Hvirlan, finished fourth. Steingrímur Hallsson, Bragdið, also won a bronze medal today. In the 800 metres for boys 16-17, Steingrímur, Teitur Bjarnastein and an Icelander battled for the bronze medal. In the end Steingrímur came out on top and finished on the podium. His time was 2:06.91 min.

There have been many more events today with Faroese participation. All the results can be found at this link: http://www.ir.is/media/misc/StormotIR2014yfirlit.htm

As mentioned, the competition continues tomorrow, and you can follow the results as they come in at the same link as above.

FÍF congratulates everyone on today’s results, and good luck on Sunday!
