Winter Series gets under way with record turnout!

As last year, running conditions were as good as they get when the 2014/15 Winter Series got under way at Tofta Skúli today. The light shower that came just after the start did nothing to cool or dampen the Winter Series runners, who powered up the hills at full speed.

The close battle between Rigmor and Duruta was also the battle for victory among the women veterans, where Tórvør Ø. Vang finished third.

 

For the first time in the Winter Series, there was a category for women super-veterans. Sunniva H. Olsen won the first gold medal in the category. Silver went to the grand old lady, Jóngerð H. Høgnesen, while Jessie Hansen came third.

The men’s veteran race was won by Henry Olsen, a good half minute ahead of Hallur Holm, who in turn was a minute and a half ahead of Guttorm Sørensen in third. The super-duper veteran Jens R. Weihe once again took gold among the super-veterans. Jósvein H. Olsen was second and Kári Simonsen third. No fewer than 9 super-veterans took part in today’s race.

Nobody competed today in the junior women’s category. But there was a strong turnout among the junior men. Bragdið’s middle-distance runners have trained hard this autumn, and they really showed their strength today. Teitur Bjarnastein won that race ahead of Rúni Seloy, but Julian Gregersen from Klaksvík also had an excellent race and was not far behind. Only 16, Julian was running Runt Agnið for the first time and came close to breaking 40 minutes at his first attempt.

The girls’ and boys’ categories also saw a record turnout. It was very pleasing to see several new faces who have not tried the Winter Series before. We also saw some remarkably good results. The categories cover five age years, so the younger ones do not have much chance of winning. That did not stop Maria Biskopstø, however, who once again proved that she can become a fantastic distance runner. The clock read 18:48 when this little 12-year-old had run the five kilometres! That gave her a comfortable win ahead of Oddvør Josephsen and Elin Kristina Ryan.

Gunnar Sivertsen is in his final year in the boys’ category. He won comfortably in 18:01. In second place came 11-year-old Hans Erland Thomsen with a fantastic time of 19:20. Third was Dánjal D. Ljósheim in 19:30.

After the race there was the medal ceremony along with a good cup of coffee and home-baked cake. Roysnið deserve great thanks for a well-organised event. It is fantastic to come to a race like this and know that everything is in good hands.
