Rigmor and Hallur win in the bad weather

Machine-translated from Faroese and not yet reviewed. Read the original.

The weather gods were not on their best behaviour when Hvirlan organised the Kerjar Run, which also hosted round 2 of the Winter Series (VK2). The men’s race promised to be very exciting. Sam ran very well at Runt Agnið and was again the favourite today. There was also a strong new name on today’s start list. The Dane Martin Gravesen has come to the Faroe Islands to work, and he is a strong runner. Several people expected him to be able to take on the best. More about that race in a moment.

Roysnið boy Rúni Skarðhamar was the quickest up the hill from Hotel Føroyar. The boys and girls only had to run 1.5 km, so it was simply a case of going for it. It was clear in every way that Rúni meant to win. He also opened up a gap on the other boys. But neither last time’s winner, Gunnar Sivertsen, nor Niklas Kruse wanted to let Rúni get away too easily, and they chased hard. Perhaps Rúni went out too hard, because when he came back onto the riding track he began to tire, and by now Niklas Kruse had really picked up the pace. In the end Niklas Kruse won, 4 seconds ahead of Rúni. Gunnar stayed with them well all the way and was just behind in third. In the girls’ race Oddvør Josephsen went out hardest and quickly opened a gap on Maria Biskopstø, who won last time. Maria could not close that gap, and Oddvør took her first VK win of the winter, just five seconds ahead of Maria in second. Just as at Runt Agnið, it was a Tripp Trapp Treysti, because once again Elin Kristina Ryan finished third.

On the way towards the old incinerator, which thankfully is no longer there, Sam Vang had taken the lead on his own, with Henry Olsen second, Hallur Holm third, Jan Elmar fourth and the Dane Martin Gravesen fifth. Around the old rubbish tip and back up to where the incineration plant stood, the last four named all ended up running together. Into the headwind they then worked their way up to Sam, who was battling on his own in the strong headwind. When they caught Sam, the Dane had dropped back somewhat, but the other four went past the cowsheds dead level and up the steep hill. Here Henry had to let go. Then it was flat out down the hills towards the riding track. Hallur was first onto the track, perhaps 20 metres ahead of Sam and Jan Elmar. Here Sam lost his grip, while Jan Elmar chased Hallur hard all the way to the finish line, where only one second separated them. Sam held on to third place, although Henry came fairly close towards the end. Martin Gravesen also finished strongly and was just behind.

Jan Elmar chased Hallur right to the finish line in a very exciting race, where for a long time five men were locked in a hard battle. At Runt Agnið they finished 4th and 7th. Whether it was the weather or the course that turned everything upside down is hard to say (photo: Hvirlan)

Things look exciting among the juniors this year. Last time Teitur Bjarnastein managed to squeeze into the top three, but this time the leading junior men finished 6th, 7th and 9th. Teitur in sixth started very cautiously today, and before he really got going, the others were too far ahead. Julian Gregersen moved up two places compared with last time, and the 16-year-old finished seventh. Rúni Seloy has given blood since the last race and therefore did not push too hard, but still ran his way to ninth place. As we have seen, a lot can happen, and in the next race, when the course is a little shorter, these three could easily be part of the battle at the front.

Last time Valborg Heinesen had come home to race, and for this race the Faroese star runner in Denmark, Marna Egholm, had entered. However, she had to work after all and so had to withdraw. She does, though, plan to come home to run round 3 of the VK. Durutua á Lofti had also withdrawn from today’s race, so once again it was Rigmor N. Arge who on paper looked like being the fastest woman of the day. Rigmor lived up to expectations and won a fairly comfortable victory, a little under a minute ahead of Beinta Hoydal Joensen, who in turn was a good two minutes ahead of Birna Mohr Joensen in third. On home ground Hvirlan did well today with the team competition in mind, because as well as first and third, they also had fifth and seventh.

A well wrapped-up Rigmor could add yet another win to many, many others.

The men’s veteran category was won by Hallur Holm, with Henry Olsen second and Martin Gravesen third. Rigmor N. Arge also won the women’s veteran category. Here Astrid Joensen was second and Adelaid Kirke third.

Jens R. Weihe won once again among the super veterans. Kári Simonsen was second and Bent H. Jakobsen third. In the women’s race Sunneva Olsen repeated her win from last time, and Jóngerð Herup Høgnesen was second.

Finally, we would like to thank Hvirlan for an excellent organisation. It is a delight to see them turn out in such numbers with so many helpers. The hot chocolate milk was probably also welcome for most people after a long time in the wind and rain.

Round 3 of the TF Winter Series will take place on 6 December out in Argir, where a new course will be tried out. More about that race later.
