Jan Elmar Sørensen wins in Sørvágur

Machine-translated from Faroese and not yet reviewed. Read the original.

The weather was as beautiful as it gets on Saturday morning, when round 4 of the TF Winter Series (VK4) was due to be run in Sørvágur. But the night had been a little colder than the weather forecasters had predicted, and the result was that everything in Sørvágur and out along the road to Bøur was sheer ice. Racing was out of the question.

With everyone now gathered and all the preparations made, it would have been a great shame to cancel or postpone to another day. The sun had come out, and the ice on the road was only a millimetre thick. The municipality promised to drive to Bøur with the gritting lorry, so it was decided to postpone the race by two hours. It was a Saturday, and of course people have plenty of other things to do. Unfortunately, some could not spare the time to wait those two hours, but we believe this was the right decision, because when the race started at 13:00 the whole course was completely clear.

Only the first stretch was a little slippery; otherwise the course was completely clear for the somewhat depleted field this time

In the men’s race, several of those who usually contend for the top places were missing. Henry Olsen turned up but could not wait, Sam Vang had not entered, and the young Klaksvík runner Julian Gregersen had injured his foot in a football match.

Jan Elmar Sørensen won his first major men’s race. He and Hallur Hom ran together to the Gásadalur tunnel, but when they turned and ran back down towards Bøur, Hallur could not keep up with Jan Elmar on the downhill. By the time they reached Bøur, Jan Elmar was already more than 100 metres ahead, and the race was effectively decided. The margin at the finish was 37 seconds. Rúni Seloy achieved his best result this winter and finished third, just behind Hallur.

Jan Elmar Sørensen won the biggest race of his career.

Rigmor N. Arge took her second win this winter. Rigmor ran very well yesterday and won comfortably ahead of Rebekka Fuglø, who was running her first round of the TF Winter Series. She has been struggling with an injury, but it was good to see her racing again. Duruta R. á Lofti gave Rebekka a tough race, but finished a good 20 seconds behind in third place. Ann Thomsen was right on Duruta’s heels in fourth place, but her strong effort earned her a place on the women’s veterans podium, where she took bronze. Rigmor won gold and Duruta silver.

In the girls’ race, Maria Biskopstø showed formidable strength and won comfortably from Oddvør Josephsen and Elin Kristina Ryan. Towards the end she was close to joining the battle at the front among the older boys. The boys’ race was nevertheless won comfortably by Niklas T. Kruse, ahead of Rúni Skarðhamar. In third place came the young Hósvík runner Hans Erland Thomsen.

The girl who never gets tired. Maria Biskopstø won the girls’ race

Among the super-veterans we had an exciting women’s race, in which Jessie Hansen took her first win. This came in a hard-fought contest with Jóngerð H. Høgnesen, who was only 11 seconds behind. In the men’s race it was good to see Regin Jóanesarson on the podium again. He had battled his way through the snow from Vestmanna to take part in the race. Gunnar Simonsen was also on the podium for the first time this winter, after his 2nd place. The comfortable winner was, not unexpectedly, Jens Rikkard av Víkum Weihe, who won by a wide margin on home ground.

The men’s veterans race was won by Hallur, Guttorm Sørensen was second, and it was good to see Hjalmar Sjóvará on the podium with his bronze medal.

The popular mayor of Sørvágur Municipality, Sune Jacobsen, presented the medals. He and Regin have known each other for many years. Sune was also able to tell us that Jens Rikkard Weihe’s family comes from the village of Víkar, and that this is no doubt where his fine running ability comes from.

Thanks to all the participants for their patience in waiting. And thanks to Frælsi for an excellent job of organising. And thanks to Sørvágur Municipality for the gritting.
