8 Faroese athletes to the Danish Youth Championships this weekend

Machine-translated from Faroese and not yet reviewed. Read the original.

Once again this weekend, several of our strongest young athletes are off to exciting competitions abroad. The Danish Youth Indoor Championships are in Skive, and as usual several Faroese athletes are taking part. Our young athletes will be looking to build on the results they achieved in Iceland in January. Several have the ability to compete for a top-three place in Denmark and are aiming to come home with medals, and for several of them a place on the Island Games team is also at stake.

Tórur Mortensen from Hvirlan is competing at the Danish Youth Indoor Championships for the first time. He is one of three FÍF athletes who receive support from Úrval, and it is this support that has made it possible for him to take part. Tórur has made enormous progress over the past year and a half, and is right up among the very best of his Danish peers. Tórur competes in the boys 16-17 category in the long jump and triple jump. In both events he was only a few centimetres short of the Island Games standard when he competed at the ÍR Grand Prix meet earlier this year. Hopefully he will do even better this time, and also earn a place on the podium.

Treysti have taken part in this competition for many years, in fact ever since Rebekka Fuglø was old enough to compete. Rebekka has won countless medals in the 800 and 1,500 m, and she has won many Danish titles. Rebekka is back again this year. Whether she will run right up to her best is somewhat uncertain, as she has been held back by injury since September, and most of her training has been alternative training. But Treysti have a brand-new card to play, as Oddvør Josephsen is taking part for the first time. She will also run the 800 and 1,500 m in the girls 14-15 category, and although she is in the younger age year, she is ranked in the top third.

Five runners from Bragdið will be taking part. Teitur Bjarnastein and Steingrímur Hallsson run the 400 and 800 m in the boys 18-19 category. Both are still some way off the Island Games standards, but on a good day both have the chance of achieving the standard in the 800 m. Niklas Kruse also runs the 400 and 800 m, but in the boys 16-17 category. He is keen to run faster than he did in Iceland, where he was somewhat cautious. A good personal best should be within reach there. All the Faroese athletes have one race each day. However, Steintór Egholm will run both his races on Saturday. First the 200 m and three hours later the 800 m, where he looks to have a chance of a medal.

Margit Weihe Fríðmundsdóttir is the only girl in the Bragdið group. She has been close to the Island Games standard in the 400 m, and will probably have another go now. She will also run the 200 m, where on a good day she could threaten the Faroese record.

FÍF wishes everyone the best of luck in their competitions!
