7 Faroese medals at the Danish Youth Championships

Machine-translated from Faroese and not yet reviewed. Read the original.

Last weekend 11 Faroese athletes were in Hvidovre for the Danish Youth Championships: four middle-distance runners from Treysti and seven sprinters and jumpers from Hvirlan. It went well. They won one gold medal, three silver medals and three bronze medals. Here is a quick run-through of the medals.

Tórur Mortensen had never been Danish champion before, but it was no surprise when he became Danish champion in the triple jump on Saturday. In his recent competitions he has consistently jumped around 13.5 m, and on Saturday 13.45 m was enough for Tórur to win his very first Danish Championships gold medal.

Rebekka Fuglø has won countless medals at the Danish Youth Championships over many years. Again this year she was expected to win medals, as there were only two and three competitors in her events. But if it was to be gold, she had to run at her best. Unfortunately Rebekka fell ill on the way down. She was sick on the plane on the way down and again the day before the competition. She still chose to compete, and ran very good times in both the 800 and 1,500 m. It was a great pity that she could not fight for gold, as Faroese records were within reach. She does, however, bring home two silver medals.

Julian Gregersen was competing at the outdoor Danish Youth Championships for the first time. In the 1,500 metres he was unlucky enough to fall at the start. And when he got back up, he was knocked over once more. He got up a second time, however, and went on the attack. He made it all the way back to the front, but had used too much energy, and in the final sprint he could not keep up. In the 800 metres he had been placed in the slower heat, because he did not have a good enough approved time. Julian comfortably won his heat in 2:02.00. That very nearly made Julian Danish champion, as the fast heat turned very tactical. Only a hard and merciless sprint between numbers 1 and 2 meant that both of them beat Julian’s time, so he took bronze.

Former Hvirlan athlete Trygvi Laksafoss now lives and studies in Copenhagen, and trains there with KIF. He was one of two triple jumpers in the 20–22 age group. Trygvi did not jump at his best, but could still go home with the silver medal. His best jump was 12.51 m.

Hallur Simonsen won bronze in the discus. He has now established himself at 42–45 metres in competition. His longest throw was 42.65 m. The silver medallist set a personal best by four metres and thereby “stole” the silver from Hallur.

The seventh medal went to Edna Maria Debes from Hvirlan. After Edna Maria jumped 10.27 metres in the triple jump indoors this winter, we have just been waiting for her to do it outdoors too. That happened now in Hvidovre, where she won bronze with 10.06 m. This would have been a Faroese record, had it not been for too much wind. Unfortunately her second-longest jump was 6 cm short of the record.

All the Faroese results in Hvidovre were as follows:

  • Tórur Mortensen triple jump, 13.45 m no. 1 of 9 GOLD
  • Tórur Mortensen long jump, 6.32 m – 7/9
