Marna at the Nordic Cross-Country Championships on Saturday

Machine-translated from Faroese and not yet reviewed. Read the original.

Just as the pack of winter runners reaches the wind turbines at Neshagi on Saturday morning, another starting gun will fire in Gothenburg, where Marna Egholm will represent the Faroe Islands at the Nordic Cross-Country Championships.

This is the second time the Faroe Islands have been represented at this competition. The first time was in 2013, when Valborg Heinesen represented the Faroe Islands in Reykjavík. Unfortunately, we do not think that any other Faroese runners are currently strong enough to race against the very best from our neighbouring countries, but the aim is of course to have more than one representative there next year.

Marna faces a very tough race when she sets off on Saturday morning at 11:15 Faroese time. The opposition is so strong that even the Icelanders have not considered it wise to send their best, for fear that they would end up as cannon fodder. We can expect Marna to have a very hard race at the back of this powerhouse field of 20 women. But if we know Marna, she will give everything she has until the very last step.

As well as competing for the honour of being the best Nordic cross-country runner, for several of the runners this is also a selection race for the European Cross-Country Championships, which take place in early December.

The competition in Sweden is also a team competition for both seniors and juniors. In the Faroe Islands we have many talented young runners, and it would be an enormously big and exciting challenge if we in the Faroe Islands set ourselves the goal of fielding a women’s or men’s junior team in 2–3 years’ time. Yes, and why not a women’s team as well, if we could get all our stars in top form at the same time?

FÍF wishes Marna the best of luck in the race tomorrow.
