Rebekka and Jan Elmar win in Sørvágur

Machine-translated from Faroese and not yet reviewed. Read the original.

Round 4 of the TF Winter Series was run in Sørvágur today. Because of snow on Bíggjarvegur, it was decided as early as Friday to move the course to Sørvágur, where it was easier to run on the salted roads.

Conditions for running were about as good as they get. The temperature was just below freezing, and not a breath of wind stirred. Around 90 runners turned out in the fine weather, and they gave us plenty of exciting battles within the field. It was above all in the men’s open category that the excitement ran high. Beforehand, a duel between Eirikur Hansen and Jan Elmar had been expected, but Julian Gregersen, Sam Vang, Martin Gravesen and Guðmundur Joensen could also be expected to make their presence felt at the front. On top of that, Andrias Hansen had turned up to race for the first time this winter, and with him you never know.

Four laps of three kilometres were to be run. The men’s pace was high from the start. Only Julian and Guðmundur managed to stay with Eirikur and Jan Elmar on the first lap, but both of them soon had to let go too. It became a hard-fought duel for the win, with Eirikur pushing the pace and Jan Elmar following. The battle went on right up to the final sprint, where Jan Elmar proved the stronger, winning another round this winter and at the same time strengthening his lead in the overall standings.

Andrias Hansen ran very well today. At one point he had worked his way up to third place, but Julian Gregersen felt that it should only be on loan for a while, because towards the end he put on a surge and pushed Andrias back to fourth place. Guðmundur Joensen lost quite a bit of ground in the second half, but still held on to fifth place.

In the women’s race there was never any real tension. Once again today the leading runners were fairly spread out. Rebekka Fuglø is in excellent long-distance form at the moment, and today she was about a minute ahead of Rigmor N. Arge, who in turn was about a minute ahead of Duruta R. á Lofti. Then there was another small gap down to Krista Nielsen in fourth place.

The boys’ race is always exciting. Dánjal Dahl Ljósheim from Hvirlan and Hans Sivertsen from Treysti are very evenly matched. Dánjal won the first two rounds but then lost in Argir. Both battled for the win today, but it was Dánjal who was the stronger. The fight for third place was also hard. Ingi Johannesen managed to stay with Hans Erland Thomsen all the way, but in the end it was Hans Erland who collected his fourth bronze this winter.

Maria Biskopstø won again in the girls’ race. She is a powerhouse of a distance runner whom only the best boys can just about keep behind them. Oddvør Josephsen was a clear second today, and Unna Ró Jacobsen finished third.

Among the super-veteran women there is real excitement. Today Sunneva Olsen once again managed to win, pushing Cecilia Arendal back into second place, after Cecilia had won the previous two rounds. The number of tough super-veteran women keeps growing. A new rising star is Elisabeth Rasmussen, who finished third today. Six female super veterans took part today! But there is still room for many more 🙂 Among the men, it was once again a clear win for Jens R. Weihe. Kári Simonsen was second and Gunnar Simonsen third.

The best male veterans were well down the field in the open category. Numbers 8, 9 and 11 – that’s how far back we had to go to find the best veterans today. And that’s a positive thing! Sam Vang was first, then Martin Gravesen, and the third veteran was Guttorm Sørensen. That is not the case for the women this winter. Rigmor N. Arge (gold), Duruta R. á Lofti (silver) and Krista Nielsen (bronze) finished 2nd, 3rd and 4th in the open category.

The junior men have finished in the same order in all of the first three rounds this winter. And so it was again in this fourth round. The winner was Julian Gregersen, second was Gunnar Sivertsen and third was Rógvi Kárason.

Round 5 of the TF Winter Series will be the Faroese Cross-Country Championships. This is a different kind of running, and it may also bring about a change in the order of the runners. The race will be held on the field by Studentaskúlin in Hoydalar and in the woodland by the girls’ boarding wing. Just as we have done in recent years.

See you in Hoydalar on 13 February.
