Krista Nielsen Faroese champion in the marathon

A duel between Krista Nielsen and Ann Thomsen was expected when the Faroese Championships gold in the marathon was decided at the Tórshavn Marathon, run on Saturday. However, it was the Swede Lina Karlsson who took the lead, while the two Faroese Championships contenders ran together for most of the course. Ann had to struggle with cramps, though, and so never really managed to take up the fight with Krista, who kept up a steady, good pace all the way. It went so well that she also caught the Swedish woman, and so Krista became both Faroese champion and winner of the Tórshavn Marathon.

Krista Nielsen has trained hard in recent years, and on Saturday she was rewarded for her efforts by becoming Faroese champion in the marathon

Krista’s time was 3:32, which is not quite as fast as she ran on the flat, faster course in Hamburg recently. She was 40 seconds ahead of the Swedish woman, and then a good four minutes back to Ann Thomsen, who struggled through the last kilometres with cramps. Ann can, however, console herself with the fact that she has won the Faroese Championships in the marathon herself before.

Not entirely unexpectedly, Roysnið runner Astrid Joensen from Fuglafjørður ran her way to the Faroese Championships bronze. She crossed the finish line in a fine time of 3:44:03 hours.

The Faroese Championships results in the open category and for the women veterans are shown below, and have exactly the same order in the top 5. No super-veterans took part in the women’s race.
