Faroese Championships day 1: The women stole the show

Machine-translated from Faroese and not yet reviewed. Read the original.

In fine weather today, the first half of the 2014 Faroese Championships was held at the Tórsbreyt track. Some exciting contests were in prospect, and the men’s long jump in particular looked set to be a strong competition. Expectations had been raised beforehand, as four men have jumped over six metres this year, so the hope was for a few good 6-metre-plus jumps. Despite two withdrawals, the competition was both close and exciting, but without the long jumps. It was the gymnast Bogi Berg who jumped furthest, with 5.91 m.

There were also withdrawals from the women’s competition, and only Marita K. Petersen and Margit W. Fríðmundsdóttir competed. But here we got a competition with quite unexpectedly good jumps. In the third round Margit took the lead with 4.57 m, just 2 cm short of the Faroese record. Marita answered with 4.61 m, a new Faroese record by 2 cm. (The wind was legal at +2.0.) But in the fifth round Margit hit back by jumping 4.74 metres, the longest recorded jump by a Faroese woman that we know of. Here, however, the wind was too strong for the jump to be ratified as a record. It was still enough for victory, even though Marita produced another legal jump beyond the old record, this time 4.60 m. So both of them had reason to celebrate after the competition: Margit for the gold and Marita for the new Faroese record!

And Margit had even more to celebrate on this first day of the Faroese Championships. She won the 100 m final comfortably after a rather slow start. But with her long strides she ran everyone down, and for the next year she can call herself the fastest woman in the Faroe Islands. Her time was 14.18 seconds. The sprinters faced a headwind today, and the times reflected it. In the men’s final only Rúni Jacobsen got under 12 seconds, and with 11.79 seconds he beat Rói Holgarsson, who had won the Faroese Championships in each of the previous four years.

Today Heri Ziska regained the Faroese title in the discus, which he lost last year. And with victory in the hammer, it was as usual a good day for Heri, with two gold medals. Randi Kúrberg also showed that she still has plenty left, winning the hammer comfortably.

Rúni Seloy went home today with four gold medals, having won the 400 m hurdles, 400 m and 800 m as well as the 4×100 m with Bragdið. Rebekka Fuglø also won the 400 m, 800 m and 4×100 m. The women’s 400 m in particular was of a high standard. All four runners were well under the old Island Games qualification standard of 64.0 seconds.

Rebekka, Margit, Katarina and Karin in by far the strongest 400 metres ever run in the Faroe Islands. Will they all make the Island Games standard for next year?

This has turned out to be just a quick, informal report. The results below speak for themselves. We are looking forward to tomorrow’s events. Competition starts at 13:00.
