On Tuesday evening, 10 June, Roysnið organised a running race in Runavík.

The race was held in connection with the stevna (village festival) taking place in Runavík next weekend. The distance was 10 km. The race counts towards the Running Grand Prix of Frælsur Ítróttur Føroya (FÍF), the Faroese athletics federation, and was also the race for the Faroese Championship title over 10 km.

There were 26 participants in the race, 22 men and four women. There was an open category and a veterans’ category (born 1957 or earlier).

As in previous years, the start was above Miklagarður. The runners ran out to Sjómansheimið, where they turned down onto the quay. They then ran along Gulasteinsvegur and up onto the road opposite Føroya Banki, where they turned back out again. This loop had to be run just over 9 times. On the final lap the runners finished at Sjómansheimið.

Conditions

It rained throughout the race, but there was little wind, so the running conditions were reasonable.

Rigmor equals the record

In the women’s race Rigmor N. Arge showed great form and equalled Sunneva Bjarnastein’s Faroese record with a time of 39:51 min. This bodes well now that the Island Games are approaching in earnest. She steadily pulled away from the other women in the race.

The men’s race was very exciting. Sigurð Justinussen of Bragdið was locked in a hard battle with the two from Treysti, Símun Joensen and Jonhard Larsen, for much of the race. Some way behind them came Guttorm Sørensen, who is recovering from a knee injury for which he had surgery this winter.

Símun Joensen came out on top in his first race over this distance. He showed once again that he can also run without a ball, and became Faroese champion with a time of 35:34 min.

Treysti’s tactical running paid off completely, as Jonhard Larsen finished second ahead of Sigurð Justinussen.

Among the veterans (born in 1957 or earlier), Óli Olsen of Bragdið won the men’s race. Next came Steindor Hjaltalin of Bragdið and Henning C. Poulsen of MIF.

Jóngerð Høgnesen of Bragdið won the veteran women’s race
