1st Schools’ Faroese Championships in athletics
For the first time ever, a Faroese championship competition in athletics is being organised this year. The competition does, however, have its roots in the school sports days that used to bring together schoolchildren from all over the country.
The aim of the competition is to raise interest in athletics.
Guttorm Sørensen, who has extensive experience in athletics, has been appointed organiser of the event.
For all age groups
Every school in the country may send one boy and one girl from each year group, from 1st to 10th grade, to the competition.
How they are selected is up to the school. FÍF hopes that the prospect of taking part in a Faroese championship will boost enthusiasm for athletics among both pupils and teachers. For example, the PE teacher for each class could run a teaching module in athletics, ending with a selection competition.
Four events
As is well known, athletics covers a large number of events within the main groups of running, jumping and throwing.
FÍF has chosen four events for each age group, representing these main groups. The events vary slightly by age group, but there will be two running distances, one short and one long, as well as long jump and shot put.
Registration
Schools must confirm participation no later than 30 April 2003. This is done by the school sending a registration form to:
Skúla FM v/ Guttorm Sørensen
Postsmoga 274
700 Klaksvík
The registration form is enclosed with the leaflets being sent out to schools in the coming days. The form can also be downloaded as a Word file here on the site, filled in and emailed back to gutti@post.olivant.fo
Entry fee
Organising a competition like this is not free. Among other things, various pieces of equipment must be bought for use at the competition. FÍF has therefore set an entry fee of DKK 30 per participant. This amount must be transferred to FÍF’s account at Norðoya Sparikassi, 9865-102.597.4, before the day of the competition.
Bib numbers
Once all registrations have been received and recorded, a list of all participants and the programme for the competition will be sent to the schools.
On the day of the competition itself, pupils collect their bib numbers when they arrive at Svangaskarð.
Medals and T-shirts
Special medals, made specifically for the occasion, will be awarded to 1st, 2nd and 3rd place in each event.
All participants will also receive special T-shirts made for the occasion.
