The 1st Tórshavn Marathon
The Bragdið AC invites runners from the Faroes and abroad to participate in the the Atlantic Airways Tórshavn Marathon on Saturday 19th July 2003.
This is the first ever full marathon in the Faroese capital Tórshavn. There has been only one previous marathon in the Faroes. This was run on the island Eysturoy as part of the International Island Games in 1989.
Half Marathon and Fun Runs
In addition to the full marathon the races on 19th July will include a halfmarathon and a 5,8k fun run for adults and a 3k fun run for children.
The purpose of the fun runs is to get as many people as possible to be physically active without being concerned with speed or times. The purpose is to have fun and to create a special atmosphere in the town centre on raceday.
The Marathon event is a big challenge for the Bragdið AC. The intention is to make this an annual event. Some runners from abroad may take part this year, but in the future the Bragdið AC is hoping to attract many runners from all over the world.
Mr. Jan Christiansen, the mayor of Tórshavn, will be firing the starting gun.
Faroese Championships
The full marathon also encorporates the Faroese Marathon Championships. Those competing in the Championship must be members of one of the running clubs of the Faroes.
